Ed101 was assembled by the English Electric Company in Preston, England in 1937, makers number 3886 and entered service with Fresh Zealand Railways in May 1938. Ed101 was used for suburban passenger trains and local goods trains around Wellington. Trains operate over a 1. 5km section of restored track that was originally piece of the Wellington to Upper Hunt main line. New Zealand Railways purchased the crane the equivalent year but it was not put into service until 1948.
Built in 1952 our locomotive beginning entered service in Wellington earlier moving to Auckland a few years later. This locomotive was one of 15 of a class that were the first Diesel Electric locomotives to run in Fresh Zealand. Stored at Hunt workshops along with considerable sisters R. 5 along with 3 others R. Here major progress has been made, with the timber framed body labor being completely replaced with a fresh steel frame and labor is currently focusing on the finishing details.
Fresh Zealand Railways purchased the crane the same year but it was not put into service until 1948. It made its way to Hunt workshops and was worn their as a store to place parts of locomotives that were being overhauled. This locomotive was one of 15 of a class that were the beginning Diesel Electric locomotives to run in New Zealand. Also in was taken by road to Hunt Workshops were it was operated for a public open day earlier being returned to SLR. Behind being the last of its class withdrawn, De508 became piece of the New Zealand Railways heritage fleet and was based at the locomotive depot in Wellington.
It became the first steam locomotive to run on the re laid Silver Stream Railway on the 23rd of March 1980 after it was trucked to the site from Seaview. The Birthday carriage will continue to be available for bookings on the Sundays we are operating.
