Our School opened at the Western End of Andrews Avenue, Lower Hutt in named then St Mary’s School River Hutt with one classroom and around 15 families attending. The school continued to be staffed by lay people until 1891 when the Sisters of Mercy took charge. Despite additions to the school in the early 1900s, the growth of the Hutt in the late twenties made it apparent that a new primary school was necessary preferably away from the business centre of town!.
Following further roll growth and earthquake damage to the building in the early 70’s Bishop Snedden gave approval for plans to be developed for a new school on the site. This new school opened in 1976 and was designed as three separate open plan areas with a target roll of around 450 students. Girls continued to significantly exceed boys roll numbers due to the proprietors’ decision not to offer education to boys beyond Year 6. 25 November Ss Peter and Paul School is no longer a private school istered by the Catholic Education Board but comes under the control and jurisdiction of the Wellington Education Board now Ministry of Education a State Integrated School. By 199 the school had a teaching staff of 17 and a high demand for enrolment.
Further accommodation was added at both Junior and Intermediate level in 199. As enrolment pressures continued a number of additional classrooms re modernisation programmes and upgrading of playground facilities were addressed. Twenty three teachers, part time staff, Teacher Aides and istration staff cater for over 300 families and 485 students

As Peter and Paul School is a Signatory to the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Concern of International Students. Our School shares a powerful relationship with our parishes and our pastoral area, in special with the As Peter and Paul Parish of Below Hunt. The OAS group is made up of one student selected from each of our Senior School and Intermediate School classes.

Students are not permitted to depart grounds until last of school day without specific direct approval of a Senior Staff member. The programmed is led by our Assistant Principal and is supported by the parents of those students who volunteer.
Enhancing student achievement and Notable Catholic Character are the main loci of the Board. A trivial group of students is chosen each year to urge our Assistant Principal in preparing and leading school assemblies during the year. Each year, our Deputy Principal leads a group of elected and selected students from across the school on the School Council. From time to time during the school year, students are invited to bring valuables taonga from home to share at school.
This pastoral concern includes financial support, physical urge meeting basic needs such as food and clothing and emotional support.
